Japanese Mariner motors (made under contract by Yamaha) have serial numbers in this format: XXX-A-###### where X is a number or letter, A is a letter, and # is a number.
Some early motors have only 5 numbers in the last group; most have 6.
In the listings below, the series refers to the first group of three (XXX) and the serial range is the last group (######).
The letter in the A position isn't usually relevant here and indicates things like shaft length and starting method (e.g. electric start, longshaft, tiller, etc).
So a 5 HP motor, for example, would have a serial something like "6E3-M-123456"
A notation of "NLA" means that Mercury no longer makes it. In many cases we can still get some of the gaskets individually though.
