EVINRUDE-JOHNSON-OMC MODEL NUMBER of the motor. SERIAL NUMBERS are not used
MERCURY, MARINER,
& MERCRUISER		 The motor SERIAL NUMBER
  (PLUS for outboards, whether remote control or tiller, rope start or electricstart, long or short shaft)
YAMAHA THE YEAR, HP, AND MODEL NUMBER of the motor
FORCE YEAR, HP, AND MODEL NUMBER of the motor.           
  MOST NEWER MERCURY-STYLE FORCE MOTORS (MID-1992 UP) will have a
SERIAL NUMBER BEGINNING WITH "0E" which we'll need
NISSAN-TOHATSU YEAR, HP, AND COMPLETE MODEL NUMBER OF THE MOTOR (e.g. NS30A3, M25C3). There is always more to it than just the HP number
